And then your girlfriend — right before your eyes — gives her number.

Whaaaaat???

Am I in somebody’s nightmare? This situation sounds crazy. But if this has happened to you, you’re not alone. Unfortunately, it happened to me too. Ugh!! It was painful.

But after some thought, I realized this pain is completely avoidable.

I spent time trying to figure out why it happened, how to prevent it, and how to create a relationship that is phone-number-proof and jealousy-resistant.

So here are my thoughts:

Why did my girlfriend give her number to another guy?

It could be 2 things. Either she’s really interested in the guy (unlikely). Or she wants to make you jealous. (Bingo!)

So why does my girlfriend want to make me jealous?

Probably because she isn’t feeling secure in the relationship.

In my experience, when women feel a strong commitment, they’re less likely to look for outside validation from other guys. Also they’re less likely to feel the need to create drama in the form of making their boyfriend jealous.

The best way to prevent your girlfriend feeling insecure is to tell her directly, “Here is what I want in the relationship.” If you want a strong commitment, tell her. Be romantic about it. Give her chocolate strawberries and say I want you to be my girlfriend.

Communicating your intention is the best way to insure that she will never give another guy her phone number.

Until the day you say, “I want an exclusive relationship”, it’s fair game to keep her options open to dating other guys.

So… What do you really want from her? Do you want her to be your girlfriend? Or is she just someone you’re dating casually?

By giving her number to another guy in front of you, she’s forcing you to figure it out.

If you are strongly interested in her and want a long-term relationship, all you have to do is tell her. Cook her a nice dinner, take her hand and say, “I want to be exclusive. I want you all for myself.” This will put you on a stronger path.

Problem solved.

But what if the problem persists? Even though you’re in an exclusive relationship, she’s giving her number to another guy.

If you can be patient with her while she’s acting out, then your patience will take you far.

Here’s what you can say if your girlfriend gives her number to another guy:

“Hey, it bothered me when I saw you give out your phone number to another guy. Please don’t do that anymore.”

This is a direct way of talking about what you want. If she agrees to this, she probably won’t give out her number again out of respect for you and the relationship.

In conclusion, women usually want the man to lead. Make it clear you don’t want her giving out her phone number. Meanwhile continue being patient with her. Try not to blow up and start a huge fight. Patience and compassion are essential for long-term relationship success.
